I like morels. They are distinctive looking and fortunately can also be found in Southern California.

@Bels_Kaylar - one of the deadliest. @PPhilip - from what I've read, most people who are poisoned mistake the younger ones for puffballs and the older ones for paddy straw mushrooms(not sure what the US equivalent would be). Even though I feel fairly confident with identifying mushrooms (and the dog has actually picked out and ate some allegedly prize mushrooms). I am not brave enough to eat anything I try without having a mycologist come with me a few times. The dog wouldn't even dig this one out of the ground.
